Above is a view of the Erie Canal footbridge at 6th St. (looking south). The Canal ran between Second and Third Avenues, which is an alley now.
On left, looking north on Broadway in front of the Arsenal, notice the trolley tracks.
On far right top, is a view of Emery's grocery ( corner of Sixth St. and Third Ave., opposite Stewarts) . The original Emery's store in Port Schuyler is shown on the right ( 5th St. and 2nd Ave. ). Edwin Emery was a long time member of Jermain's Barclay Jermain Club.
From the Attic
Recently in exploring the Web for bits of history concerning Watervliet and West Troy, I came upon this picture taken circa 1900 of grade school students at the old public School #1 in Port Schuyler ( corner of First Avenue and Sixth Street - northeast corner). It is just north of the later / newer School #1 on the southeast corner. The building of this old School #1 was for many years the location of the VFW Flynn Post. In looking at the picture of the group of students ( probably born circa 1890 ) I realized that some of them could be grandparents of some members of the congregation who have roots to this neighborhood. Some of them could very well had been members of Jermain Church at that time and in later years. Take a look at the pictures at this link and perhaps you will be surprised.
